On the popular Greek holiday island of Zakynthos, efforts are underway to expand one of its most famous beaches. Navagio Beach, nestled between cliffs and home to a stranded shipwreck, is currently threatened by erosion; restoration work is required to preserve it. According to the Greek news outlet Ekathimerini, the beach will be extended by 30 metres using 45,000 cubic metres of gravel. This will position the shipwreck—which ran aground in 1980—further away from the seawater. Along with the opportunity to spot *Caretta caretta* (loggerhead) sea turtles, the 'MV Panagiotis' shipwreck is one of the island's primary tourist attractions.
Navagio Beach is currently largely closed to the public due to the risk of landslides—a fact that has prompted the local municipality to accelerate the restoration efforts.
Giorgos Stasinopoulos, the mayor of Zakynthos, stated, "The shipwreck is not only the most significant tourist attraction on Zakynthos; it is a global symbol of our island—a unique piece of natural and cultural heritage that we must protect and pass on to future generations in an improved state."
